Val de Travers

The Val de Travers is a valley or two along from ours (Val de Ruz) and we had our first trip there today. Mainly walking though - a couple of shortish walks (maybe 12 km all up) and some beautiful countryside.  The scenery here just doesn't show up anywhere near as good in a photo, but here are a selection from today to give you a feel for it:

The track from La Ferme Robert towards the Creux du Van.

For Shayne and John - just so you don't think it's all wussy and girlie over here, they have bears ..... or had bears.  This marks the spot where one was killed in 1757 - just missed it!

The Creux du Van - it's MUCH bigger than it looks here, and is pretty spectacular in real life.

The kiosk/restaurant at the bottom of the Creux du Van track - very Swiss.

For Aja - can you find the green fairy?  For others, this is "Green Fairy" country - where they made (and still make) absinthe.

"Up" was the order of the day, although I'm still trying to convince Jan that if you park your car and walk, returning to the car later, you always have as much up-hill as down-hill.

Now normally, there's a lot of water running down here.

FroChapeau de Napoléon, a restaurant at the top of a big hill - Swiss concept - (or a small mountain - our terms), the view was amazing.

The first pond after the source of the Areuse River - begged a photo really.

View back at the holding pond - I just liked this photo.

There were a lot of mills on the early stretches of the Areuse River, which were powered by water.  Here they have used 3 of the millstones as part of the retaining wall along the side of the road.
