Warning! If big views leave you cold, you might want to skip these (although there are some pics for Aja).
Today's trip to Jungfraujoch (the highest railway station in Europe at 3454 metres above sea level - that's further straight up than Pambula P.O. is from our place!) was big in a few ways. The views on the way through the Berner Oberland in various trains (we rode in 9 different trains today!) were big, the mountains were big, and the day itself was big (over 9 hours in trains and a full on 13 hours from leaving home to getting home again. It was also 30° plus in Interlaken and still 28° in the car at 8pm - while it was still in the underground car-park in Neuchatel where we'd left it for the day!
Everyone knows that photos of big scenery never do it justice, and perhaps this will once again prove that theorem - you really had to be there. We'll fill in the details tomrrow.
View from the train heading up to Kleine Scheidegg.
"Going up"!
Telephoto shot on the way from K.S.
One of the two viewing points from the 10km tunnel on the way from K.S. to Jungfraujoch - this is an incredible feat of engineering, considering it was built in the early 20th century.
The "Eismeer" or ice sea at 3159 metres above sea level.
The crowd taking photos - we were not alone :)
Our view from lunch - while we were eating pot-au-feu and bratwurst in the Sphinx cafeteria (pics of the Sphink later) - the Aletsch Glacier.
Us on the viewing platform of the Sphinx.
The glacier again.
Jan on our cross glacier walk - bloody hard work it was too, at 3454 metres and in snow, and uphill and ..... well it was just hard.
The Sphinx.
Neil on same track, but on the way back - hence the smile :)
The view back to where we walked from.
Moo cow for Aja.
An ice sculpture in the Ice Palace - starting to wilt. The Ice Palace is inside the glacier.
Some slow mice, encased in ice - for Aja.
Neil and an ice bear at the "Top Of Europe" - in the Ice Palace.
Jan exiting the Ice Palace.
"Going down". STEEP train (cog rail) ride down this hill.
Kleine Scheidegg railway station/mainstreet with a typical train.
Some locals and some hikers at the K.S. station.
For Aja.
View towards the front of the train, descending from K.S. to Grindelwald.
Unknown town on the way from K.S. to Grindelwald.
House outside of Grindelwald.
It was easy to get excited about the views.
