Unless my rapidly improving understanding of French has failed me (although I think Daniel also mentioned this to me before they left for Oz), every house built in Switzerland since the 50s has been required by law to include a bomb shelter in the cellar (at a cost of around $15,000). This may sound a little wierd to non-European readers, but Switzerland has always been a little vulnerable due to it's position and size.
The following pictures show the shelter in Daniel and Nicole's cellar.
The shelter door seems a good 25cm thick and is so heavy that I have to work hard to close it. You can see the dead bolts top and bottom to secure it shut. The shelter is behind the wooden door.
Same thickness window and same size locks.
The air supply gear will supply fresh air to the room (hopefully) until the danger has passed.
I get the feeling that the Swiss look on the shelters as a good place to keep wine, beer, fruit and vegetables cool. Seems pretty sensible when you think about it.
